We produced two emotive short films in partnership with Civil Society Organisations, to bring forward deeply human stories of loss, resilience and contribution.
In Bulgaria, we followed Elena, a refugee who founded an art therapy centre in Pomorie to support other displaced Ukrainians.
In Slovakia, we told the story of a teacher rebuilding her life in Banská Štiavnica, sharing her gratitude and her hope for the future.
Each film combined intimate interviews, rich visuals and uplifting narratives to highlight not only the challenges these women have faced, but also the strength and generosity with which they are shaping new communities far from home.
Change
The goal of these films was to increase public understanding of, and empathy for, Ukrainian refugees, by amplifying real stories from those who had fled the war. MakerChange was briefed to create a strategy and content series that could emotionally connect with audiences, and shift perception.
Makers
Local civil society partners provided vital insight on cultural nuance, language and messaging. We assembled a small, expert production team, including scriptwriting led by our Managing Director, an experienced storyteller and writer. Together, we ensured every element of the campaign reflected authenticity, care and respect for the communities featured.
Impact
The films reached over a million viewers through a targeted digital campaign. Audience feedback showed increased empathy for refugees and pride in the supportive role of host communities. By centring refugee-led initiatives and stories of mutual respect, the project helped to reframe public narratives and push back against disinformation with compassion and truth.
