We produced eight short documentaries (in Sri Lanka, Tuvalu, The Bahamas, Costa Rica, Syria, Madagascar, Kenya, and Nigeria) to tell stories of how maritime law works in practice, and why it matters in everyday life. We captured individual stories in each country, supported by social cutdowns, a photo gallery for an offline exhibition, and motion graphics to deliver key messages. Editing was largely local to maintain cultural nuance and speed, with central oversight to ensure visual and narrative consistency.
Change
LRF wanted a short-film series spotlighting graduates of the International Maritime Law Institute, whose work protects people, coasts, and commerce. They wanted each episode to blend a personal journey with local issues, from safety at sea and environmental protection to port governance, seafarers’ rights, and the blue economy. Powerful photography was required for an exhibition.
Makers
We produced the series through MakerChange’s in-country network, partnering with hand-selected local filmmakers, producers, and fixers to manage casting, permits, and on-the-ground logistics. We paired community knowledge with shared creative standards. Pre-filming storytelling workshops, community WhatsApp groups, and on-location soundbites ensured each story authentically reflected lived experiences.
Impact
The series has amplified the work of IMLI graduates and partners worldwide, raising awareness of maritime law’s practical impact on safety, environmental protection, and commerce. The films will be used for advocacy, education, and public engagement, helping audiences better understand the importance of IMLI and maritime law in protecting communities and ecosystems across multiple regions.

I worked with MakerChange Studio on an 8-part, global interview series, highlighting the career of former Lloyd’s Register Foundation-funded graduates to the IMO’s International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI). The films celebrate the extraordinary impact these individuals have made on oceans safety in their home nations, and explore the unique challenges faced by those who work at sea and coastal communities in emerging maritime economies. Despite the complex brief, the team navigated the logistical difficulties with ease. From concept development through to delivery they were an absolute pleasure to work with, bringing a level of project management, technical expertise and strategic insight that I have rarely seen in other creative agencies. Their approach to storytelling perfectly aligns with our strategy as a charity, and I'm elated with the results.
